About the
research projects

In 2017, the University of Toronto’s iSchool designed a new Library and Information Science (LIS) curriculum, which introduced four new required courses. One of the courses, “The Information Experience”, which was designed and taught by Dr. Jenna Hartel, covers the fundamentals on information behaviour. The major assignment of “The Information Experience” was for students to design and conduct their own information behaviour research study using Dr. Sonnenwald's (2005) Information Horizon Interview (IHI) method. The assignment, worth 75% of the students’ final grade, was spread across the semester with three elements: a worksheet where students explored their topic within LIS literature, the original research project using the IHI with three different informants and written as a formal paper, and a group presentation in collaboration with their cluster members. Early in the course students decided on a topic and population to study and were subsequently put into a cluster based on their topic. The clusters were academia, family, health, leisure, the pleasurable and the profound, and work. Beyond the presentations, the clusters consisted of 4-5 student that became a peer-to-peer support group, with further support from the course’s Teaching Assistants--Anh Thu Nguyen and Christie Oh.

About the IHI

The Information Horizon Interview (IHI) method was created by Dr. Diane Sonnenwald. The IHI allows a researcher to obtain a visual representation of information behaviours regarding certain populations or locations. Ultimately, the IHI research method helps to answer questions regarding the type of resources certain demographics use and how those individuals get the information they need. This can help information professionals create useful and accessible systems, tools, and resources for those that need them.
